Momentum over motivation

This is a saying that has become so popular these days, but holds so much truth to it. Whether it is for cleaning, nutrition, fitness, gratitude, communication or in our case finances…it works. We never would have become mortgage free in our first house when I was 26 if it were not for the consistency and momentum we had in paying down the mortgage. The exact same thing was true once we were mortgage free in our current house. People will often tell us that financially we did not make the best choice. We are aware of the perks of investing and earning higher returns in other investments while slowly paying off a mortgage, however the satisfaction of the short time line in the long run was clear for us. The reward to it is that once you are mortgage free you get the chance to prioritize other things. We were also investing on the side to learn about how stocks work and then once we paid off our mortgage we had a little more freedom to play around with investing more with what we learned. The main thing even after paying off the mortgage and switching to investing is still momentum over motivation. It sounds boring, but it becomes very satisfying when you start to see the gains.
